Portugal is an exceptional destination for cycle tourism. The varied landscapes, smooth quiet roads, and fantastic gastronomy make for wonderful experiences on two wheels. The Portuguese are very generous people and will go out of their way to make your time special.

We have created the ‘Best of Portugal’ North to South Tour for intermediate and advanced road riders, covering an average of 65 or 110km per day. This is a superb taste of the variety of the regions in Portugal; starting with an iconic train journey through the Douro Valley, to the cols of the Serra de Estrela and the rolling hills and historic sites of the Alentejo and Algarve – this tour has something new every day.

North

The north of Portugal is lush and green, world famous for the Douro Wine Region, which is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient terraces cling to the side of every hillside, changing colour throughout the seasons and creating unforgettable memories. Your journey starts here by rail.

The Serra da Estrela are the highest mountains in Portugal, and in their remoteness lies their charm. Here, traditional practices endure, man lives alongside nature in harmony, and cycling here is a privilege which few people experience.

Central

Central Portugal is characterised by the dry, expansive plains of the Alentejo, and small villages that feel utterly untouched by modern life. Some of the best producers of cheese, wine and olive oil in the country are found here. For many miles cyclists will be grateful for the plane trees that line the route, providing shelter from the strong sun – and don’t forget to look out for storks who roost in the telegraph poles beside the road.

South

As you reach Southern Portugal, the greenery returns along with a range of hills that produce a few punchy climbs but stunning views towards Spain and the surrounding ‘Serra’. Cork oak plantations make a large majority of the roadside vegetation, along with beautiful orange groves.

The route is littered with magnificent castles, a reminder of its less peaceful past. The Algarve itself was one of the last strongholds of the 400 year long Islamic Conquest of Iberia, re-taken by the Christians in 1189. Many place names, churches and the gastronomy of central and southern Portugal still hint at this rich heritage.

How challenging is this tour?

We have two options for you. The 13-day tour is for intermediate road cyclists who are comfortable riding an average of 65km per day. It includes one rest day in Estremoz.

The 8-day tour is for advanced riders with excellent fitness, covering an average of 110km per day. This tour involves significant climbing on some days, because the best of Portugal is seen from the hills!

You can, of course, add extra rest days if you like – just get in touch.

What levels of support do you provide?

You can choose the level of support that suits you best. If you prefer a DIY approach, you can buy our instant download package, with GPX files, cafe and restaurant recommendations, and get started on your planning right away.

Alternatively, you can choose a self-guided tour and let us take care of all the logisitics! Scroll down for full details.

What is the terrain usually like on this tour?

We have designed this tour for you to witness the best scenery that Portugal has to offer, and that involves some climbing, particularly on the advanced tour! It’s totally worth it for the views and the long, winding descents afterwards.

If you choose the advanced tour, one day you will ride up to the highest point in Portugal – ‘Torre’, at 2000m. This will be a real highlight of your trip.

The roads are smooth, quiet and an absolute joy to ride.

What type of scenery can I expect along the way?

You will start in the Douro Valley, a lush wine region carpeted in vineyards. Next, you will climb into the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in the country.

After this, you will roll into the plains of the Alentejo, where white hilltop towns look down onto the quiet countryside below. Finally, in the Algarve you will ride through groves of olives and citrus trees, all the way to Loulé or Tavira.

Are the roads safe in Portugal?

Yes, in Portugal, the roads we plan for our clients are generally very safe for cycling, with many sections having light traffic, especially outside of major towns. The road surfaces is mostly well-maintained, and drivers in Portugal are accustomed to cyclists.

We hate traffic just as much as you do – we stick where ever possible to small backroads.

What type of bike is best for this tour?

A road bike, or a comfortable gravel bike with road tyres, is most comfortable for this tour.

Don’t forget, we do offer bike hire too, including e-bikes. Just get in touch.

What is the best time of year to do this tour?

This tour can be ridden all year round. However, spring and autumn are most comfortable, as temperatures are great for riding and the chance of rain is minimised.

The Serra da Estrela can experience heavy rain in the winter months, and most riders find late July and August in the central and southern regions rather hot to be cycling, unless you are already acclimatised.

Can I adjust this tour?

Of course. Either you can edit the route yourself, or speak to one of our team and we can help you with any adjustments you might want to make.

Please note that major changes to a tour will be considered a custom tour and we will have to charge extra for that service so that we can spend some time ensuring it’s exactly what you want!

What type of hotels can I expect?

You will stay in hand-picked rural hotels because we believe in supporting the local communities wherever possible. Some are chosen for their amazing views, others for the facilities, and some for simple Portuguese character!

For the most part, these are 3-4* hotels. If you are travelling in a small group or as an individual, we may be able to offer you more choice – just let us know your preferences.
