Are you looking for a cycling holiday with a difference? The Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela Gravel Tour could be the one for you! Here’s everything you need to know…

How challenging is this tour?
This tour is suitable for most riders with some consistent gravel cycling experience. Some days encompass significant elevation gain, but these are interspersed with flatter coastal sections.
What levels of support do you provide?
We can provide all or a mixture of the following services:
GPX files, hotel and restaurant reservations, luggage transfers, airport transfers and mechanical support.
You can either download this tour right now for the route files, accommodation and restaurant / cafe recommendations, or alternatively you can book a self-guided tour – just get in touch!
What is the terrain usually like on this tour?
You will mostly ride on scenic coastal paths with a good gravel surface. Some of this tour follows EuroVelo 1, on high-quality, sign-posted cycling paths. As we enter Spain, you will ride on wooded gravel tracks through the hills to Santiago.
As with all our gravel tours, around 30% takes place on quiet, traffic-free tarmac roads.
All our routes are thoroughly checked by our team beforehand, so there is no hike-a-bike!
What type of scenery can I expect along the way?
You will be treated to panoramic ocean views, pristine sandy beaches and peaceful rural landscapes, all interspersed with beautiful fishing villages dotted along the coast.
Are the roads safe in Portugal?
Yes, in Portugal, the roads we plan for our clients are generally very safe for cycling, with many sections having light traffic, especially outside of major towns. The road surfaces are mostly well-maintained, and drivers in Portugal are accustomed to cyclists.
We hate traffic just as much as you do – when this tour goes on roads, we stick where ever possible to small backroads, and when we’re on gravel – the best smooth gravel tracks we can find. (We don’t like hike-a-bike either!)
What type of bike is best for this tour?
You will be best equipped with a purpose built gravel bike on this tour, or a robust road bike with strong tyres.
Don’t forget – we can assist you with bike hire, including e-bikes. Just get in touch.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
In our experience the best seasons for cycling this tour are spring and autumn, avoiding the winter rains and the intensity of the summer heat.
Can I adjust this tour?
Of course. Either you can edit the route yourself, or speak to one of our team and we can help you with any adjustments you might want to make.
Please note that major changes to a tour will be considered a custom tour and we will have to charge extra for that service so that we can spend some time ensuring it’s exactly what you want!
What type of hotels can I expect?
You will be rewarded each evening with hand-picked 3-4* hotels. You will experience wonderful facilities, great service and exceptional Portuguese cuisine.
We are very used to adjusting our self guided tours to suit the client, just let us know if you want to upgrade your hotels (subject to availability).
7-day Oeiras to Santiago da Compostela Gravel Tour
Self-Guided and Instant Download options are available. Pricing starts at just €***pp.
Portugal is one of the least explored countries in Europe, and a true hidden gem for cyclists. During this trip you will ride North along the wild Atlantic Coast, before crossing the border to Spain.
Portuguese Atlantic Coast
Portugal’s dramatic west coast is a tapestry of wave-sculpted cliffs and sweeping golden sands. Surfers from across the globe flock to Praia do Norte, near Nazaré, home to legendary waves that can tower over 100 feet. Just inland, the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais offers a lush sanctuary for wildlife, its rich vegetation and unique microclimate creating a paradise for nature lovers. The São Jacinto Dunes are part of a National Reserve encompassing pine trees and natural ponds, frequented by many migratory bird species.
Coastal towns
Tucked between the beaches you will find intimate rocky coves and family-owned seafood restaurants. Traditional fishing practices live on here, which you can witness in historic villages such as Porto Novo and São Pedro de Moel. In Aviero, colourful molicieros boats are still used to navigate the lagoon.
Spain
Inland from the vibrant coastal city of Vigo, ancient Galician forests cling to the hillside. This area is lush with native species and rich in wildlife, and peppered with tiny, remote villages. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santiago da Compostela awaits, with its 13th Century Cathedral which has been drawing pilgrims like a magnet for centuries.
