WHERE TO STAY IN THE ALGARVE AS A CYCLIST

We have 15 years of collective experience cycling in the Algarve. Let us share our exertise and find the best place for you to stay in 2026.

The Algarve is an incredible destination for cycle tourism. Quiet roads, endless gravel tracks and incredible cultural experiences await. Get it wrong, however, and you risk being stuck in traffic, cycling on rough and badly surfaced roads, or surrounded by crowds of tourists.

This is the Paradise guide to where to stay, and where to avoid, when you are here to ride your bike.

Our Top 3 for 2026

What’s important to you? Is it the chance to stay in boutique, high quality hotels and dine in fabulous restaurants? Or are you after a more rural, traditional experience? Do you want to ride road or gravel?

Tavira, and around

If you are looking for coastal scenery and gentle riding both on and off road, the pretty seaside town of Tavira could be the one for you.

The coastal plains offer miles of relatively flat cycling, so if you’re not a climber, this is a great option. However, the Serra do Caldierao are well within striking distance if you fancy an extra challenge!

Add a fantastic range of restaurants and hotels, and you’ve got a recipe for sucess right here.

Alte, and central

The village of Alte is perfect for those looking for an authentic escape to the interior of the Algarve. Its a maze of cobbled streets, with little cafes on each corner. The choice of hotels and restaurants is a little more limited, but every establishment here has its own character.

If you’re ready to tackle some hills, this is the ideal place to start. The iconic climb up Malhão is just is short ride away, as is the winding ascent to Barranco do Velho. Whether you’re here for gravel or road, you won’t have to do the same ride twice.

Lagos, and around

If you want to combine awesome riding with a buzzing Algarve city vibe, Lagos is the place for you. The historic centre is packed with great places to eat and drink and the range of hotels is brilliant.

If you’re passionate about gravel, this is where you will find the best off-roading in the Algarve.

Near the coast, the terrain is rolling, whilst further inland, the hills of Monchique beckon, with Fóia at the summit!

❗Where to Avoid❗

Whilst many places in the Algarve would be suitable as a base for cycling, there are a couple of locations we would seriously advise against, if you want to make the most of the opportunity to get out on a bike.

Faro

The capital of the Algarve has a rich history, but sadly the cobbled centre is surrounded by miles of busy roads which fill with traffic. Good value accommodation is hard to find.

To experience the best of Faro, come for a day trip to wander round the old town and swim at Faro beach, a stunning stretch of sand not far from the airport.

🚗 Traffic : 5/5 🚗

🏖️Crowds of tourists: 4/5🏖️

Albufeira

This holiday hotspot is a magnet for stag parties and package holiday-makers. It’s busy all year round, but especially in the summer months. As a result, finding good value or characterful accommodation is difficult here.

The town is sprawling and surrounded by a web of fast, busy road, with back-to-back traffic at peak times, which you will need to navigate every time you get on your bike.

🚗Traffic : 4/5🚗

🍻Range of Irish Pubs : 5/5 🍻

Why don't you recommend Quita do Lago and Vale do Lobo?

Both these areas offer stunning coastal scenery and sandy beaches. However, we feel that better value for money can be found elsewhere, even on the coast. But if you are looking for a high-end hotel and a wide range of international cuisine, these may still be good options for you.

I spent an unforgettable week in the Azores with Fiona as our group leader, cycling for seven days through the rolling hills, breathtaking lakes, and spectacular coastline of São Miguel Island. Everything was perfectly planned. Every route, every stop, and every detail was thoughtfully organized, making the entire experience smooth, relaxing, and truly enjoyable. Fiona is an outstanding guide—professional, knowledgeable, kind, and full of positive energy. Cycling with her is a real pleasure, and she made us feel welcome and cared for every single day. She gave us seven days in paradise, filled with incredible landscapes, great company, and memories that will stay with me forever. I can’t wait to ride with Fiona again—next time in Italy, exploring the beautiful roads and landscapes of Umbria. Thank you, Fiona, for such a wonderful experience. I highly recommend Paradise Cycling Tours to anyone looking for an unforgettable cycling holiday.

As a newbie to gravel riding I cannot recommend Paradise Cycling more! Fiona and Tomas make everyone feel so welcome (no matter your level or experience) and these are genuinely social rides. No one is left behind and I’ve only ever felt supported and comfortable - it’s a wonderful cycling environment. I can’t thank you enough for all the tips and tricks, and for helping me enjoy gravel riding so much!
