What our customers are saying...
Peneda-Gerês National Park Gravel Cycling Tour
A unique gravel cycling adventure from Porto to Gerês, through the wild and ancient landscapes of Peneda-Gerês National Park.
Portugal remains one of Europe’s most under-explored treasures — and a true paradise for cyclists. Your journey begins in the Douro Valley, where you will take the scenic train from Porto to Mosteiró. The Douro is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region, established in 1756 by the Marquis of Pombal to protect the quality of Port wine. Its winemaking heritage, however, dates back as far as Roman times.
Today, ancient terraced vineyards spill down every hillside, creating unforgettable views around every bend in the road.
From the Douro, you will ride north into the hills via Amarante, one of Portugal’s oldest settlements. Winding gravel tracks lead through woodland, quiet valleys and forgotten villages that feel almost untouched by time, including Vieira do Minho.
After three days, you will reach Peneda-Gerês National Park, where wild mountain ponies roam freely and traditional life continues in small granite villages. You will follow old Roman roads, pass ancient baths and discover the thermal springs that made this region so important centuries ago.
You will even spend one night across the border in Spain, in the village of Lobios, before turning west to finish your journey in the spa town of Gerês, deep in the heart of the national park.
This is one of our more adventurous, off-the-beaten-track tours. You may not find cafés around every corner, but you will be rewarded with spectacular remote landscapes, quiet trails and a uniquely authentic experience of northern Portugal.
Along the way, you will stay in characterful local hotels and enjoy traditional Portuguese food and wine in independently run restaurants. We believe that the best way to experience a place is by supporting the people and businesses that make it special.
