Portugal remains one of Europe’s most authentic and under-explored cycling destinations — and this journey captures it at its very best. Beginning in Faro, in the heart of the Algarve, you’ll roll out beneath wide southern skies, passing orange groves and salt flats. Quiet backroads guide you north, far from the crowds, through landscapes that shift beautifully with every stage.
As you leave the Algarve behind, the scenery opens into the vast plains of the Alentejo — a region of cork oak forests, whitewashed hilltop villages and long, peaceful roads that seem made for cycling. Here, life moves slowly. Traditional cafés still gather locals each morning, and the rhythm of rural Portugal remains unchanged by time.
Further north, the route becomes greener as you approach the Atlantic coast once more. You’ll ride alongside wild beaches, through fishing towns and historic ports, before reaching Lisbon — one of Europe’s most charismatic capitals. Arriving by bike into the city’s cobbled streets and riverside avenues is a moment you won’t forget.
Throughout the tour, you’ll stay in fabulous bike-friendly hotels and eat in traditional restaurants serving regional Portuguese dishes and wine — because we believe that travel should support the communities you ride through.
This is a journey through real Portugal: diverse landscapes, rich history, welcoming people and quiet roads that make you feel as though you have the country to yourself.
How challenging is the Faro to Lisbon tour?
This tour is designed for beginner – intermediate level cyclists. The days are 53km long with 650m of ascent on average.
What levels of support do you provide?
You can choose the level of support that suits you best. If you prefer a DIY approach, you can download this tour instantly — giving you access to the route files, accommodation suggestions, and our recommended restaurants and cafés.
Alternatively, you can book the self-guided option, where we handle all the logistics for you. Scroll down to explore both options in more detail.
What is the terrain usually like on the Faro to Lisbon tour?
The terrain is predominantly hard-packed gravel and quiet rural dirt tracks, with rolling inland climbs and wide cork forest double-track. Surfaces are generally compact and fast-rolling, though you’ll encounter some loose stones on climbs and occasional sandy patches nearer the coast. It’s physically engaging rather than technical, with steady undulations rather than extreme gradients. Overall, expect remote, low-traffic riding on varied but manageable gravel.
Each day will consist of at least 60% gravel track sections (imagine a 4×4 track) and the rest small quiet tarmac roads.
What type of scenery can I expect along the way?
Expect constantly changing landscapes as you ride north from the Algarve to Lisbon. You’ll pass through orange groves, limestone hills and quiet cork oak forests before entering the vast, open plains of the Alentejo.
The route then reconnects with the Atlantic, offering wild beaches, dramatic cliffs and coastal pine forests. Your journey finishes through the striking hills of Arrábida before arriving into vibrant Lisbon.
Are the roads safe in Portugal?
Yes, in Portugal, the roads we plan for our clients are generally very safe for cycling, with many sections having light traffic, especially outside of major towns. The road surfaces is mostly well-maintained, and drivers in Portugal are accustomed to cyclists.
We hate traffic just as much as you do – we stick where ever possible to small backroads, and if on gravel – the best smooth gravel tracks we can find. (We don’t like hike-a-bike either!)
What type of bike is best for the Faro to Lisbon tour?
A gravel bike, or a comfortable road bike with gravel tyres, is most suited to this tour. Don’t forget – we can provide bike hire too, including e-bikes. Just get in touch.
What is the best time of year to ride the Faro to Lisbon tour?
The best time to ride this tour is March to June and September to November, when temperatures are warm but comfortable and the landscapes are at their most beautiful. Spring brings green countryside and wildflowers, while autumn offers golden light and quieter roads. July and August can be very hot, particularly inland in the Alentejo, so early starts are essential if travelling in peak summer. The Algarve’s mild climate makes this a long-season destination overall.
What type of hotels can I expect?
You will stay in great quality Portuguese hotels, handpicked by our team. They offer comfort paired with a sense of traditional Portuguese culture and fantastic value for money.
