I spent an unforgettable week in the Azores with Fiona as our group leader, cycling for seven days through the rolling hills, breathtaking lakes, and spectacular coastline of São Miguel Island. Everything was perfectly planned. Every route, every stop, and every detail was thoughtfully organized, making the entire experience smooth, relaxing, and truly enjoyable. Fiona is an outstanding guide—professional, knowledgeable, kind, and full of positive energy. Cycling with her is a real pleasure, and she made us feel welcome and cared for every single day. She gave us seven days in paradise, filled with incredible landscapes, great company, and memories that will stay with me forever. I can’t wait to ride with Fiona again—next time in Italy, exploring the beautiful roads and landscapes of Umbria. Thank you, Fiona, for such a wonderful experience. I highly recommend Paradise Cycling Tours to anyone looking for an unforgettable cycling holiday.

As a newbie to gravel riding I cannot recommend Paradise Cycling more! Fiona and Tomas make everyone feel so welcome (no matter your level or experience) and these are genuinely social rides. No one is left behind and I’ve only ever felt supported and comfortable - it’s a wonderful cycling environment. I can’t thank you enough for all the tips and tricks, and for helping me enjoy gravel riding so much!

The Alentejo is a growing destination for gravel cycling. The stunning landscapes, endless tracks, and fantastic gastronomy make for wonderful experiences on two wheels. The Portuguese are generous people who will go out their way to make your time special.

This carefully designed premium wine and cycling tour brings together some of our favourite destinations in the heart of rural Portugal, where the country’s finest wine and agricultural traditions thrive. From the historic charm of Évora and Monsaraz to the hidden gems of Alvito, Pedrógão, and Albernoa, you’ll journey through unspoilt countryside and timeless landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass through traditional towns rich in authentic Portuguese culture and enjoy some of the most breathtaking views the Alentejo has to offer – all from the saddle.

The self-guided version of this trip includes an immersive private tour of a 1,600 hectare estate in the Vidigueira region of the Alentejo, where you will taste four wines accompanied by traditional Portuguese cured meats and regional cheeses. If you choose the instant download option, let us know if you would like to book this additional experience for you.

We can’t wait to share this beautiful country with you.

How challenging is the Alentejo Wine Tour?

Our Alentejo Wine Tour suits beginner and intermediate riders. You should expect to ride up to 5hrs each day, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and the wine!

What is the terrain usually like on the Alentejo Wine Tour?

The terrain in the Alentejo is quite forgiving, with some rolling hills but few ascents. Its non-technical so perfectly suitable if you don’t have much experience on a gravel bike.

Each day will consist of between 30-50% gravel track sections (imagine a 4×4 gravel track suitable for vehicles as well) and the rest small quiet tarmac roads.

What type of scenery can I expect in the Alentejo?

Wide rolling plains stretch for miles in the Alentejo, dotted with traditional villages where time stands still…

You will ride through gorgeous vineyards, and olive groves on winding gravel tracks, and spend the nights in stunning hilltop towns and fortified villages, with magnificent views over the plains.

Are the roads safe in the Alentejo?

Yes, in the Alentejo, the roads are generally very safe for cycling, with many sections having light traffic, especially outside of major towns. The road surfaces is mostly well-maintained, and drivers in Portugal are accustomed to cyclists.

We hate traffic just as much as you do – we stick where ever possible to small backroads, and if on gravel – the best smooth gravel tracks we can find. (We don’t like hike-a-bike either!)

What type of bike is best for the Alentejo Wine Tour?

A gravel bike, or a sturdy road bike with gravel tyres is best for this tour. We can also offer bike hire, including e-bikes – just get in touch!

What is the best time of year to ride the Alentejo Wine Tour?

We recommend doing this tour in Spring or Autumn where temperatures are between 25-30 degrees celcius, but Winter can also be fabulous and very quiet too. Temperatures in the Alentejo during the summer can be very hot – we recommend against riding here in July and August, when temperatures commonly reach 40 degrees celcius.

Can I adjust the Alentejo Wine Tour?

Of course. Either you can edit the route yourself, or speak to one of our team and we can help you with any adjustments you might want to make.

Please note that major changes to a tour will be considered a custom tour and we will have to charge extra for that service so that we can spend some time ensuring it’s exactly what you want!
